Car finance and the real cost of ownership

Compare cash, loans, HP, PCP and leasing using the total you will pay, not the headline monthly figure.

01 / 04

Budget for the whole car

Add the purchase price or finance payments to insurance, vehicle tax, fuel or charging, servicing, tyres, repairs, parking and any clean-air-zone charges. Keep an emergency reserve for unexpected work. Get a registration-specific insurance quote before committing.

For finance, compare the deposit, all monthly payments, interest and fees, plus any final payment. A lower monthly payment can still mean a higher total cost.

  • Check the total amount payable and representative APR.
  • Price insurance before placing a deposit.
  • Allow for depreciation if you expect to sell within a few years.

Understand the ways to pay

Cash avoids borrowing costs but reduces savings. A personal loan can make you the owner from the outset, subject to the loan terms. Hire purchase (HP) usually involves a deposit and fixed payments, with ownership transferring at the end once terms are met.

Personal contract purchase (PCP) usually has a deposit, monthly payments and an optional final payment if you want to own the car. Returning the car may involve mileage and condition limits. Personal contract hire (PCH) is leasing: you return the car and do not own it.

Keep in mindAsk for a written illustration for the exact car and your circumstances. Finance terms and eligibility vary.

Compare offers on the same basis

Ask each lender or dealer for the cash price, deposit, term, annual mileage, APR, total amount payable, fees and end-of-agreement options. Compare the same deposit and term so a change in monthly payment has a clear explanation.

Check whether add-ons such as warranties or insurance are optional and what each costs. Read early-settlement and missed-payment terms before signing. Independent guidance is available from MoneyHelper.

  • Avoid choosing only by monthly payment.
  • Check any final PCP payment against what you expect the car to be worth.
  • Keep a copy of the pre-contract information and agreement.

Model the costs that change

Fuel and electricity prices, insurance premiums and vehicle tax can change. Use current quotes and official tax information for the specific registration. For an EV, compare home and public charging separately; for a plug-in hybrid, estimate how often you will actually plug in.

Keep in mindVehicle tax and charging grant rules change. Follow the official links below for current figures and eligibility.
