Start with the journeys you actually make

Write down your regular journeys, annual mileage, parking situation, passenger count and the largest things you carry. A small car may be perfect for commuting but awkward for a pushchair; a large SUV may cost more to run than you need.

Decide which requirements are essential and which are preferences. Then shortlist a few models and trims, rather than searching only for one badge.

• Measure boot space with the items you really carry, not litres alone.
• Check child-seat access, rear-seat comfort and visibility in person.

Compare body styles and fuel types

Hatchbacks often suit town driving and tighter parking; estates can offer excellent load space; SUVs provide a higher seating position but vary widely in practicality. Check dimensions and real-world usability rather than assuming a body style guarantees room.

Petrol, diesel, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric cars each fit different use patterns. Diesel may suit some high-mileage motorway drivers, while a plug-in hybrid needs regular charging to deliver its intended electric benefit. A full hybrid charges itself while driving; a battery-electric car needs external charging.

Build a shortlist you can test

Compare the exact year, engine, gearbox and trim. Two adverts for the same model can differ in safety equipment, charging speed, infotainment or warranty. Ask the dealer to confirm the specification and included equipment before travelling.

Compare insurance quotes using the actual registration, and look at tyre sizes, servicing schedules and likely repair costs. The cheapest purchase price may not be the cheapest car to own.

• Set a maximum total monthly ownership budget.
• Save three to five realistic listings.
• Call ahead to confirm availability, history and a test-drive appointment.

Check accessibility and everyday comfort

Entry height, seat adjustment, steering reach, door opening and control layout matter more than a brochure photograph. If you use mobility equipment, confirm that it fits and can be loaded safely. Try the route you drive most often during a test drive.
